Why I need more ‘Broad City’.

For those of you who are unaware of the brilliance of this Comedy Central series, it follows Ilana Wexler (Ilana Glazer) and Abbi Abrams (Abbi Jacobson): two Jewish ladies in their twenties living in New York experiencing the world through a pot-tinted glass. The series started out as a web series on Youtube but was converted to television when Amy Poehler, Comedy Queen, picked the series up for a tv run. The show has had 2 seasons so far and has been renewed for a third.

What kept me watching this show is how natural the comedy feels. With most comedy shows, especially sitcoms, the comedy is forced and ultimately isn’t funny. With Broad City the misadventures of our two protagonists often get them into awkward situations that, in real life, wouldn’t happen but because the acting is just so relaxed and natural you completely believe it and it just kept me coming back.

The characters are also fantastic! Ilana is one of my favourite characters on TV, so open and understanding about everything. She constantly avoids work and chases her dream for an equal society, her love for her best friend is incredible and their friendships is positive and clean. A rare anomaly for F/F friendships in the media.

Abbi, at first, seems a little more reserved to Ilana, she isn’t as confident as her companion but once you get into the series and you see Abbi finding herself out of her comfort zone in awkward and stressful situations and she shines. She has this fumbling, cute humour about her that will have anyone watching cheering when she sees her situations through (whether it ends well or not).

Broad City has a multitude of great things: actual, positive and diverse representation, great comedy, good writing and a fantastic cast. It’s preaches really positive feminism and is perfect for everyone. If you haven’t already, I’d urge you to watch this show. And then watch it again. It’s so easy watching and so enjoyable. I regret binge watching the first 2 seasons because, at 20 odd minutes per episode and 10 episodes a season, it was over pretty quickly. I need season 3, I don’t know what I’m going to do without new episodes for so long.

Thanks for reading.

All the best,

Andrew!
