This week has been absolutely mental. Not only do I have the ongoing fight with my dissertation (which is actually coming along quite well it’s just a lot of work and really stressful), my girlfriend also turned 21 which meant my months of planning, preparing and purchasing all came to a head. We did get away to a spa for the night and it was amazing to pretend that there was no such thing as stress.
There’s nothing quite like rivalry. It can span decades, cause wars and make history. It can also create some terrific cinema that is adaptable to a multitude of genres. This week’s Thursday Movie Picks will look at some of the camp, funny and brutal rivalries to grace our screens over the decades. But before we begin, I should give thanks to our gracious host Wanderer Through the Shelves who week in, week out provides some terrific topics for us to delve into. SO, without further ado let’s dish the dirt on some of cinema’s best rivalries.
It’s been a while since I’ve done this but this Fear Friday I’ll be talking about a few horror trailers for films due to be released this year. I’ve already mentioned IT in Cutting Room #8 but I didn’t get to properly get into it so there’ll be talk of that. I’ll also be discussing Annabelle 2 and It Comes at Night.
I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 weeks since I last posted. I knew it would happen at some point and I’m going to use the same excuse I’ve been using for the past year now; university. But I’m almost done. I have just over a month left, with only my dissertation to do and then I’m officially free!! I’ve also been applying for jobs/attending interviews which is really exciting and scary. I’m hoping to go into a job in PR and Communications so it’s really competitive but I’m liking the process so far, I just hope I get a job for when I graduate (hopefully before). Anyway, despite being so busy, the cinema has been my sanctuary so let’s do this.
It’s back! It’s back! My favourite part of blogging is when I get to talk about horror films. And I haven’t been able to do that for a long while. So, here I am again. Talking shit about scary films. Easing into things, I’ll only put you through short bursts of terrifying torture with some short horror films. I shared some of my favourite short horror films with you way back when and thought it was time to share some more. Short horror, when done well, can provide a few minutes of undiluted tension and fear and also show how effective squeezing a whole narrative into 5 or so minutes. So, I thought I’d do a follow up and highlight some of my favourite quick horrors I’ve come across since my first post!
As my uni work increases and the hunt for graduate jobs continues, I’ll be happy when March is over. I have two assignments due in this month and then I can devote all of my time to my dissertation. And then I’m free. Despite my busy schedule, I’ve actually been able to sit down and watch some films which I’m happy about.
SO, one of my favourite things to do on my here blog is participate in Blogathons, especially really cool ones like Two Dollar Cinema’s Mt Rushmore of Movies 2017 blogathon. The rules are simple: take 4 cinematic things you love and tell us why they should be carved into rock for all eternity. Don’t hold back. It’s a chance to talk about something you love so DO IT! For me, nothing beats a really good opening scene. So I’m gonna share some of my favourites, but if that’s not your vibe then make sure you head over to Two Dollar Cinema to find something that is. But first, at least give my picks a chance?
So, it occurred to me recently that, despite occasionally running a film-centric blog, I’ve never told you guys what my favourite films are. Now I could be here for days listing all the films I love and the reasons why, but actually choosing my all time favourites proved quite difficult, but I somehow managed it. It’s not a ridiculously long list but it’s not short; I’ve even compiled some franchises into one choice because things would get silly otherwise. Anyway, here they are, my all time favourite films as of February, 2017:
I got very excited when I saw this week’s Thursday Movie Picks for two reasons: 1) TELEVISION EDITION!!! 2) SUPERHEROES!!! While Marvel dominate our cinema screens and DC try to do the same, superheroes on TV have really taken off so this week’s theme is current and fits well. My picks are going to be a mix of shows that I’ve watched at different stages in my life and have revisited since watching. So without further ado, here we go.
I’ve been really busy in the past couple of weeks but I’ve still managed to blog which is good, I’m glad I’ve kept to my word. The reason for me being so busy is partly uni and partly personal. I’m super excited to announce that my podcast is now live! I’ve been working so so hard on it and I’d love for you guys to give it a listen. It’s a fictional whodunit-style mystery about an internet celebrity going missing. It’s called Who Took Harmony Warren and it’s entirely produced and written by me, there’s a full cast of talented people and I’m really proud of it! So if you’re feeling nice, maybe you’ll give it a listen and let me know what you think?
